Assessment on Poultry Production Systems, Performance and Constraints in Girar Jarso Woreda, North-West Shewa, Ethiopia

This study was aimed to investigate the production systems, productivity of chicken under the farmer management system, and identify and prioritize major constraints in three kebeles in Girar Jarso woreda by using semi structured questionnaire, field visit and interview from 120 randomly selected respondents. As the finding revealed, the free range production system was prominently practiced in all kebeles and the productivity of local chicken was limited, egg production ranges 45- 57egg per year on average , shortage of balanced ration and disease out breaks were the first paramount problems identified that were followed by predators and pure water availability. Almost all farmers provide home available cereal grains as supplement without any fixed time although higher tendency was observed while they leave their roost in the morning (31.33%). In all kebeles, the respondent provides supplementary whole grain to all age groups together on bare ground without considering contamination, this mainly due lack of awareness. Average age of first egg laying of chicken was about 26 weeks and above, which was longer than exotic chicken 22 weeks of age. Hatchability percentage was higher 75% that might be due higher broodiness characteristics of local chicken. The survey would give baseline information to prioritize the major constraints of poultry production and undertake scientific intervention by the concerned experts.
