Assessment of Black Ant, Tetramorium aculeatum Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) Plantations at Teppi, south western Ethiopia

Coffee (green gold) is the back bone of Ethiopian economy. Black ant (Tetramorium aculeatum) decreases the yield of coffee indirectly by hindering the coffee berry collection through its sting. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to assess the biting ant in order to find appropriate management options to control biting ant. The following three activities were undertaken to achieve the above objective. 1st Survey questionnaire was prepared and a total of 100 respondents were interviewed during the year 2014 between October and November to know farmers perception about biting ant, 2nd the association of biting ant with other insects of Coffee, 3rd seasonal abundance and distribution of biting ant. All the farmers of the surveyed area were considering the biting ant as a pest. There was ecological relationship between biting ant and some shade loving coffee insect pests. The average number of different insects found on Coffee trees with ant nest ranges from 3.1 to 4.7 and Coffee trees without ant nest 1.7 to 3.07. The total average ant nest per tree was ranges from 3.07 to 4.8 for dry season and 0.4 to 8.8 for wet season. The distribution of biting ant in the fields was high during dry season and at lower altitude.
