Evaluation of Oats varieties in Highlands of East Gojjam

The study, conducted at the Debre Markos Agricultural Research Center in East Gojjam, Ethiopia, aimed to adapt and evaluate promising oat varieties for forage production in highland areas. Five improved oat varieties (CI-8251, CI-2296, Was (CI-1506), SRCPX80Ab2291, and SRCPX80Ab2806) were tested across three sites: Sinan, Debre Eliyas, and Aneded, using a randomized complete block design with three replications. No significant differences were found among varieties in terms of tiller number, plant height, fresh biomass yield, or leaf-to-stem ratio, although SRCPX80Ab2291 and Was (CI-1506) showed slightly superior plant height and fresh biomass yield, respectively. Location impacted yield and related traits, with CI-8251 producing the highest tiller number at Debre Eliyas and Was (CI-1506) recording the highest fresh biomass yield at Aneded. Results suggest that these oat varieties perform comparably across sites and are suitable for forage production in the highlands of East Gojjam.
