Dairy Production System, Opportunities and Constraints in Urban and Peri-Urban Sululta District, Ethiopia

Ararsa Gutema
The study conducted in Sululta District, Oromia special Zone, and Surrounding Finfine with the objective of assessing, dairy production system, production opportunities and constraints. Seven kebeles purposively selected based on dairy production potential and accessibility to urban center. Owners of milking cows and selling milk during the study period were the targeted population. A total of 135 dairy producers randomly selected based on proportional size of each kebeles and interviewed using semi-structure questionnaire. The mean of cross and local milking cows 6.93 ± 0.268 and 3.5 ± 0.24. Milk production systems in the study area were traditional 37%, semi-intensive 59% and commercial 4%. Mostly feeding milking cows separately and feed sources crop residues, grass and concentrate and there was feed scarcity at all season. The mean of milk yield for crosses and local cows 12.2 ± 0.18 and 2.1 ± 0.07L/day, there was significant difference at (P ≤ 0.05) in milk yield and lactation length between the two study areas. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that proper planning and implementation of appropriate institutional, technical, and technological interventions in an integrated approach with multiple stakeholders and dairy farmers would be essential to overcome the identified constraints of dairy production and to improve income and food security of dairy farmers in the study area.
