Review on Potential Camel Milk Production and Existing Production Challenges and Opportunities in Ethiopia

- The objective of this paper is aimed to Review on Potential camel milk production and existing production challenges and opportunities in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is holding huge number of camels in Africa and it makes the country the third in camel population from Africa. Camel (Camelus dromedaries), the most climate resilient livestock, plays a significant role in the livelihood of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in Ethiopia. Mainly camel rearing in three regions of Ethiopia parts namely; Afar region, Somali regions, and Borena and Kereyu areas of Oromia region. Milk and meat of camel is used as food security for Ethiopian pastoralists in arid and semi-arid as well as for other Africa, countries. The number of camel population and camel milk production in Ethiopia increasing from year to year. The daily milk yield of camel is vary due to different factors that are may be lactation seasons, lactation length, diseases, feed and level of management. Consumption of camel milk in Ethiopia is governed by socio-cultural and religious. Shortage of feed, diseases, lack of infrastructure, shortage of camel milk market and long distance for searching market and lack of camel milk processing companies are challenging camel milk production in Ethiopia. On the other hand, large number of female camel population, longer shelf life of camel milk, better nutritional and medicinal values, increasing camel milk price and emerging of camel milk processing companies are opportunities of camel milk production in the country. This review paper is aimed to indicate the unexploited resources of camel milk production in Ethiopia so as to initiate whether local or foreign investors in camel milk production and product processing investment in the country.
