Study on Histopathological Changes Caused by Coccidiosis in Desi Chickens

- The study was carried out from September 2019 to December 2020 to identify the histopathological changes caused by Eimeria spp, in desi chickens in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. A total of 178 intestine samples were collected from different farms and local poultry slaughterhouses for histopathological examination. Out of 178 samples, 74 samples were found positive for caecal coccidiosis. Mixed infection of Eimeria tenella and Eimeria acervulina species was observed and the mean values of Eimeria tenella and acervulina oocyst measurements were 22.77μm and 19.09μm for length, 19.09μm and 17.02μm for width and 1.19μm and 1.11μm with shape index respectively. Histopathological examination of the affected part of intestine samples showed thickening of the wall, hemorrhage, congestion of blood vessels, necrosis of mucosal epithelial, and presence of different development stages of Eimeria in the caecal mucosa. Hemorrhages were observed in the lamina propria of villi and submucosa. The study demonstrated histopathological changes in the caecum caused by coccidiosis in desi chickens.
