Breeding Practices and Reproductive Performance of Goats in Metekel Zone, Benishangul Regional State, Ethiopia

Bainesagn Worku Wolelie; Mezgebu Getnet Alebel; Habtie Arega Kidie
The study was carried out in three districts of Metekel zone (Bulen, Mandura and Guba). The objective of the study was to asses breeding practices, farmers’ selective breeding objectives, and reproductive performance of goat production. A total of 180 households from three districts of nine kebeles were selected purposively based on goat population and production potential. Both qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS versions 20. The primary reason of keeping goats were for cash income. Castration was a common practice by the goat keepers. Farmers mainly practice natural and uncontrolled mating systems. Selection was practiced both for male and female. Appearance, twining ability and kidding frequency were the most frequently reported traits in selecting breeding does. Appearance, growth and color were testified traits given due emphasis in choosing future breeding bucks. Average 1st mating age for female, average 1st mating age for male, average 1st kidding age and the average number of kids born at birth(ns) were 7.26 ± 0.12, 9.29 ± 0.18, 12.39 ± 0.12 and 1.88±0.031 respectively. It was concluded that understanding breeding practices reproductive performance of indigenous goats can be used as first step in designing a sustainable breeding programme and utilization in the study area.
