Esubalew Shitaneh; Habtie Arega; Mezgabu Getent; Bainsegn Worku; Amssalu Bezabeh
The study was conducted in Bullen, Dangur and Wonbera Districts of Metekel Zone, north western Ethiopia to assess beekeeping activities, inputs and outputs marketing. For this study 150 respondents were from three districts randomly selected and interviewed using pre-tested, structured questionnaires. Data were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The average age of the sample respondents was 39.78 years. This indicates that an active and productive age for rearing of beekeeping activity and also 15.66 years on average beekeeping experience. About 99.9% of respondents were engaged in beekeeping activities was male. The source of traditional hive used for beekeeping is 90% & 10% own constructed and purchased respectively. The peak periods of honey harvested was from October to December and June to July and also sometimes March to April in each year. The frequency of honey harvesting was 52%, 24% and 24% once, twice and three times per year respectively. The productivity of traditional hive on average was 4.99 ± 2.36 honey yield per year/colony. On average the net income attained from hive product in study area was birr 3047.28 per year. The actors in honey marketing were producers, collectors, tej houses, retailers and consumers. Generally the area had good potential of honey production with increasing trend of expansion of bee colony but the productivity of honey was decreasing due less introduction and management system of frame and top bar hive, pest & predator problem, pesticide and inaccessibility of modern beekeeping equipment in the area. We recommended that the zonal and District agriculture office were strong effort on extension service and technical intervention was important for farmers to use the moveable frame hive, establish honeybee marketing cooperative in the study area. And also the government should be set different rules and regulation about the importation and utilization of herbicides and pesticides because of those chemicals were tremendous loss of honey bee.
