Characterization of Goat Production System and Breeding Practices of Goat Keepers for Community-Based Breeding Strategies at Mandura, Metekel Zone, Ethiopia

Mezgebu Getnet Alebel; Bainesagn Worku Wolele; Habtie Arega Kide
This study was conducted at three kebeles of Mandura district, Metekel zone. Objectives of study were to assess breeding practices, characterize goat production system and generate base line information for establishing community-based goat breeding program in the district. A total of 180 goat owner respondents were selected randomly from the list of farmers. Data were analyzed using SPSS versions 20 and indices were calculated to provide overall ranking of the purpose of keeping goats, economic contribution of farming activities, selection criteria for male and female goats, major feed resources in dry and wet seasons and major constraints of goat production in the study area. About 57.2% of the respondents were literate who had learned elementary school and above. The major purposes of keeping goat were for income, meat consumption and saving. Among the major farming practices, goat production was the most important while field crop and cattle production were the second and the third important activities in respective order. Communal grazing land was the major feed resource for goat production both in wet and dry seasons. Goat productivity has decreased in the last five years (49.4% of the respondents). Mating was dominantly uncontrolled (93.9) where the source of breeding bucks was mainly from own flock (57.8%). Goat producers practice buck exchange between neighbors. About 98.9% of respondents allow mating of relatives (buck mate his mother and siblings). The main purpose of buck keeping was for mating (57.8%). Selection of both males and female parents was practiced for the next generation. Feed shortage and disease were mentioned goat production constraints. Since goat production is the most important farming activity and primary source of income and producers indigenous knowledge on parent selection, that could be combined with the scientific way of selection, establishing community-based breeding program could benefits the villages and the country at large.
