Investigation the Major Causes of Organ Condemnation in Sheep and Goats Slaughtered at HELIMEX Abattoir, Debrezeit, Ethiopia

Dereje Tulu
Sheep and goats are the major sources for meat, skin and offal exported in Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2016 to December 2017 to determine the major cause of organs condemnation (liver, lung, heart and kidneys) and the associated annual financial loss at HELMEX abattoir. A total of 1882 (goats 1,062 and sheep 820) randomly selected sheep and goats slaughtered in the abattoir were included in this study. During ante mortem examination nasal discharge (25.5%), coughing (6.6%), diarrhea (3.0%), depression (2.9%), emaciation (2.3%) and lameness (1.8%) were observed. Postmortem examination showed that 964 (51.22%) livers, 1,033 (54.89%) lungs, 253 (13.44%) hearts and 434 (23.06%) kidneys were condemned. The major causes of condemnation were calcification (17.3%), Stelesia hepatica (10.9%), hepatitis (10.9%), fasciolosis (5.37%) and hydatidiosis (3.5%) for liver; pneumonia (41.5%), emphysema (5.0%), hydatidosis (3.9%) lung worm (3.7%) and calcification (2.6%) for lung; pericar- -ditis (5.1%), hydro pericardium (1.1%), calcification (6.5%) and imperfect bleeding (0.8%) on heart and nephritis (10.2%), nephrosis (6.4%), abscessation (2.2%) and calcifica- -tion (4.2%) on kidney. Fasciola species, Stelesia hepatica, Cysticercus tenuicollis, hydatidosis and lung worm were found to be the major parasitic conditions responsible for organ condemnation. Total annual financial loss due to organ condemnation was estimated at 164,414.5 USD. Results of the present work warrant immediate need for the prevention of causes of organ condemnation and pathological abnormali- -ties through development of animal health delivery, enforcement of slaughter policy, education on animal welfare/humane slaughter and training of slaughterhouse personnel on standard slaughter operations
